Gypsy Jazz with Matt Holborn, Sol Grimshaw & Simon Read

Gypsy jazz in The Cave, now every second Thursday of the month. Matt Holborn hosts each night with special guests, and September's sold out fast. This month he is joined by Sol Grimshaw on guitar and Simon Read on double bass. Matt Holborn is one of the finest jazz violinists working in Britain and the host of these nights. Trained at Leeds Conservatoire and schooled further by Tim Kliphuis and Tcha Limberger, he has taken this repertoire to Ronnie Scott's, the London Jazz Festival, Pizza Express Jazz Club and the Festival Django Reinhardt at Samois, the pilgrimage gig for anyone who plays this music. He has played in Bill Bailey's live band, co-founded the London Django Collective, and his album For Stuff, a tribute to the violinist Stuff Smith, was called "celestial" and "rapturous" by the i. His first guest on guitar is Sol Grimshaw. Raised on the Isle of Wight in a musical family, he has had Django Reinhardt as his main influence since the age of twelve, came up through the Purcell School and graduated from Guildhall with first-class honours. He now plays over 200 shows a year, at Ronnie Scott's, the Barbican, the 606 Club and the Savoy, and has played the Django Reinhardt Festival with the London Django Collective and the Berlin Philharmonie with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra. Holding it all together on double bass is Simon Read, one of the most in-demand jazz bassists in London. Leeds-trained, he has toured and recorded with the Adrian Cox Quartet and the Sam Leak Trio, and is the bassist in Matt's own quartet. His trio album Dual Highway came out last year. Violin, guitar and bass: the classic hot club line-up. It is fast, funny, romantic music, built on a hundred years of players trying to outdo each other, and it belongs in a small room where you can watch the hands move. The Cave is our intimate venue with a very limited capacity. Georgian wine at the bar, khachapuri out of the oven, and three musicians who have played the big rooms doing it close enough to touch.
